Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
The song that describes not only my fellings today, but my feelings since I've been at NMU is "Runner Secret Handshake Remix" by The City Drive.
Ø Now that you made it to NMU – why are you here?
I'm at NMU because I want to be able to get a good education at a school that makes me feel like I'm at home.
Ø How did you choose this school?
NMU is close to home for me. It's about a 2 hour drive, and with me having a boyfriend that's still in high school, it's exactly what I wanted. I know that sometimes it's a bad idea to base your decisions on a boy, but we've been together for 5 years now, and I think the decision is well worth it.
Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
Northern is an amazingly friendly place, and there's so many outdoorsy things to do... and that's what I was looking forward to when I chose the school.
Ø List initial observations of your classes.
Classes are soooo different than high school classes. I just want to say that I absolutely hate the classes where the proffessor just talks as fast as they can and they don't have a power point. It's just going to take some time to get used to.
Ø What observations have you made about other students?
All I've seem to have noticed is how many people are out having fun, and yet I haven't done anything yet. I really don't understand how they have time to go out and do things other than homework.
Ø About your instructors?
Actually, I don't have any instructors that I don't like. They all seem like normal human beings...hehehe. No, but really, they all seem really nice and willing to help.
Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
I really need to learn how to study... college -style. Thank goodness I have UN 100. :)
Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
I really need to figure out how to handle all my homework so I can find a little extra time to go to the PEIF. My goal is to get to the PEIF next week.

Excellent job! You're right, most Profs are going to lecture non-stop with no visual aids. I remember thinking my hand would fall off because I scribbled notes for an hour straight. We will definitely learn how to study better in UN100. I too always wondered how other students had time to have fun because my nose was always buried in a book in the LRC. I think as you adjust and learn how to juggle school and fun, it becomes much easier. That's why we will discuss time management a lot this semester.
Finally, I too had a boyfriend in HS when I was in college, and he was worth sticking around. I eventually followed him to Texas when he entered college and I don't regret any of it. At least you guys have AIM/Facebook/Myspace/Cells now - we had nothing like that!
I hope you get to the PEIF too :)

I totally feel you on this one sister. All sorts of people are partying and having fun, or sitting in their rooms playing video games, but I'm too busy working or doing my homework to join in the fun and games. Madame's right, when you budget your time you find free time for fun, but be prepared for it not to jive with your friends' schedules (or lack thereof)...find solitary pursuits to enjoy (for me, it's songwriting).
You seem to have a level head on your shoulders and that's rare. Just remember that your working your ass off while everyone else is partying is going to pay off, when come exam time you won't quite be as frazzled as everyone else...and you'll perform better too.
Besides, the way I see it, I can have fun and get hammered every night now, and then have to work every day of my life until I'm placed in a nursing home, or I can work my tail off now while I still have a tail to work, and then rest easy when I'm 55 and my kids are all grown up and I can go golfing and play guitar and cribbage every day of my life. :)
Think long-term, and college won't seem so overwhelming. One of the lessons I've learned this third time around through college.
