Ø What is your plan to get involved on campus? What are your interests? Will you or have you joined any student organizations? Which two events besides UNITED & Career Major Fair do you plan on attending?
My plan on getting involved on campus starts with meeting new people, because so far I've realized that the more people you meet and get to know, you get invited to do more things and a variety of things on campus. So far, the things I've been looking into for getting involved all have one thing in common.... FUN. I have attended a football game and the hypnotist so far, and they were both really fun. I also plan to go to a hockey game and a rugby game this weekend. I haven't joined any organizations yet, but I'm planning on getting involved in Superior Edge.
Ø Fast Food Nation - Chapter 6:
Ø What are some of the problems facing cattle ranchers?
Ranchers are facing problems such as: rising land prices, stagnant beef prices, oversupplies of cattle, increased shipment of live cattle from Canada and Mexico, development procedures, inheritance taxes, and health scares about beef. Also, a lot of the land that ranchers once used is now being used for the building of new and improved buildings and facilities.
Ø What are “captive supplies” of cattle? (“The four major meatpacking companies now control about 20 percent of the live cattle in the U.S. through ‘captive supplies’” (138). (See also p. 142).
Captive supplies are cattle that are either maintained in company-owned feedlots or purchased in advance through forward contracts.
Ø What was the impact of the Chicken McNugget on the poultry industry?
The poultry industry used to sell whole chickens, but now they sell them cut into pieces, cultets, and nuggets. Also, chicken sellers used to grow their own chicken. Now, the industry consists of the big company sellers and then there is the growers. Growers don't even own the chickens they grow; they are owned by the big companies.
Ø How does the nutritional value of a McNugget compare to a hamburger?
Today's McNuggets contain twice as much fat per ounce than a hamburger.
Ø How does the suicide rate for ranchers and farmers compare with the rate for U.S. citizens in general? Why?
The rate of suicide for ranchers is 3 times higher than the national average. This is because or all the pressure put on the ranchers by the influence of fast food chains, the monopoly power in the meatpacking industry, the depressed prices in the cattle market, etc.
Ø Do you feel as if there is any healthy fast food available to consumers? If so, where and why? Give specific examples of products.. Please be honest and support your opinions. For example, I feel that Subway's Veggie Sub is extremely healthy due to its freshly-cut produce, cheese, and fresh-baked breads. I actually talked to a friend who works at Subway and he said in MQT, they slice their own produce. (My fear was that it arrived pre-sliced and filled with preservatives). It's not organic, but it's a start.
I don't think that there is a fast food place that's completely healthy to eat at, but there is Subway which has a healthier menu; as stated above, has the fresh veggies, and Fazoli's which seems to be a bit healthier than places like McDonald's and Burger King just because not all their food is covered with grease.

Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.
My ideal Instructor would have to be the type that only tests you on what he/she lectures on. I don't mind if they lecture the main points of a subject and then expect you to read those points in the text book and know all the details, but I really don't like when they lecture on certain things and then expect you to read the entire book and know everything they didn't talk about.
Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?
All students have different learning styles. In order to prevent forgetting things when it comes to test time, you should make sure you know your learning style and you should be studying that way. If you are studying with people who have different learning styles than you, you may think your studying and picking up information, but you really aren't.
Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?
When studying, I make sure I read through all my notes a couple of times, and then type all the information I remember. I then review my notes and compare them to what I typed to see what information I missed. Also, I like to write out notecards and then study that way as well.
Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?
I am absolutely horrible with timed tests and quizzes. I have really bad concentration, so lots of times I have to read a question at least 3 times. Because of this, I then struggle to get the quiz or test done in time.

After reading some of the chapters in FFN, I totally believe this person's story. Even though the person said when they could and couldn't work, the took advantage of them and made them work whenever the wanted, and then on top of that... treated them like crap. The employee tells us a number of things that happens behind the scenes and some of it is just unbelievable. Those fast food restaurants are gross and discusting. Most of the people that work there, I would imagine, can't really get jobs any where else, so Mc Donald's takes advantage of these poor people, and screws them over big time; no breaks, sucky hours, and horrible pay.
Also, read this short excerpt-- I was shocked:For coffee drinkers, it would seem fairly safe to just grab a quick cup of coffee at McDonalds on the way to work. But many health conscious people would object to it also including this list of ingredients: sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate, and carrageenan.
I'm not really sure what any of those ingredients are, but I'm pretty sure I would be absolutely correct if I were to say that they are not good for you. :) And if they're not... that's a lot of non-healthy things in one cup of coffee.

Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.
The skeletal system is made up of 206 bones and is divided into 2 subdivisions. Some to the functions of this system is that it protects vital organs such as the brain, heart, lungs, and spinal cord. It also is used for the storage of minerals, but its most known function is the support it provides for the human body.
Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.
Um.... I know there were some, I just can't think of them at the moment. :) Although, I will say that finally meeting my roommate was great. Adri and her boyfriend are two of the nicest people you could ever meet. My roommate's a sophomore and her boyfriend's a senior, so having them around has helped me get through these first few weeks so much.
And something really fun that I've done since I've been up here was when I went to that Hypnotist thing this past Friday. THAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!!! I laughed so hard that I couldn't stop crying. It was well worth going 2 hours early to get seats!
Ø Where do you want to be (academically) in six months?
In six months, I better have a good routine down. I'm still having some difficulty getting everything I want done. But, in six months I want to be working as hard or even harder than I am now. I don't want to be one of those kids that starts slacking off because they think they have this whole college thing figured out.
Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.
So far I have rarely done anything other than sit in my room and try to study as much as possible. Also, this past weekend I wanted to go home and watch my boyfriend play a big football game, but I didn't because I knew I would not study as much at home as I would here.
Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.
Like I said, I haven't really done anything other than sit in my room and study, but when I am here and my roommate is too, I seem to procrastinate a lot. Another bad habit I've been encountering is that I've been taking a lot of naps. I've been staying up late studying and then I'll sleep pretty late and still be tired, so I'll take naps all throughout the day.
Ø Explain how you approach studying your a) textbook and b) notes.
When studying my textbook, I have a hard time retaining the information. I highlight the important stuff and try to remember the stuff, but I'm not very good at it.
When I'm studying my notes, that at different story. It's a lot easier for me to study my notes. What I do is read over a few pages at a time, and then go back over those few pages again. I then take a little break and when I comeback... I talk to myself. :) I try to recite everything that was on each page with all the details of each subject.
Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.
Well, it depends on how the professor presents the information. If he/she doesn't use a powerpoint, I write down as much as I can. If he/she uses a powerpoint, then quickly skim over each slide, and write down a summary of what I think is the most important stuff.
Ø FAST FOOD NATION:
Ø Watch this short 1980’s McDonald’s commercial. McD’s reps have actually claimed they do not target children in their ads.. Pay attention to the tagline: “The Hamburglar is very clever and very sneaky!” Why is this ironic?
To be honest, I'm not good at picking up these kinds of things. But I'm going to guess that they by saying that the "Hamburglar is very clever and very sneaky", they are saying that he's bad; and that's exactly what the McDonald's Corp. is doing. They are being clever and sneaky by targeting the children of the world, and trying to hide it as best as possible.
Ø Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie food through toys and cute corporate mascots?
I don't think it is right to target young children who are unable to make smart decisions about the type of foods they eat. But, companies are trying to make money, and I don't think they are doing anything bad if they are just advertising their products to the age group that is going to love it the most. It comes down to good parenting. The parents are responsible for making decisions for their children, so they have to be able to say no to the fast food industry, and stop blaming the industry and start blaming themselves for the decisions they make.

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
The song that describes not only my fellings today, but my feelings since I've been at NMU is "Runner Secret Handshake Remix" by The City Drive.
Ø Now that you made it to NMU – why are you here?
I'm at NMU because I want to be able to get a good education at a school that makes me feel like I'm at home.
Ø How did you choose this school?
NMU is close to home for me. It's about a 2 hour drive, and with me having a boyfriend that's still in high school, it's exactly what I wanted. I know that sometimes it's a bad idea to base your decisions on a boy, but we've been together for 5 years now, and I think the decision is well worth it.
Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
Northern is an amazingly friendly place, and there's so many outdoorsy things to do... and that's what I was looking forward to when I chose the school.
Ø List initial observations of your classes.
Classes are soooo different than high school classes. I just want to say that I absolutely hate the classes where the proffessor just talks as fast as they can and they don't have a power point. It's just going to take some time to get used to.
Ø What observations have you made about other students?
All I've seem to have noticed is how many people are out having fun, and yet I haven't done anything yet. I really don't understand how they have time to go out and do things other than homework.
Ø About your instructors?
Actually, I don't have any instructors that I don't like. They all seem like normal human beings...hehehe. No, but really, they all seem really nice and willing to help.
Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
I really need to learn how to study... college -style. Thank goodness I have UN 100. :)
Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
I really need to figure out how to handle all my homework so I can find a little extra time to go to the PEIF. My goal is to get to the PEIF next week.
